Notes:

Coarse sugar will work as a replacement for the sanding sugar sprinkles.

I used Dove dark chocolate hearts, but you could swap our Hershey’s kisses or some other chocolate candy if desired.

Directions

1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt.  Set aside.

2. In a large bowl or in the bowl of a stand mixer, beat butter until creamy.

3. Add sugars and mix until combined.

4. Add egg, vanilla, and lemon juice.  Mix for another minute or until well blended.

5. Add flour mixture to the wet mixture and mix on low until incorporated.

6. Mix in the milk and red food coloring until completely combined.

7. Cover and place dough in refrigerator and chill for 30 minutes to an hour.

8. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cookie sheet with parchment paper.

9. Scoop tablespoon amounts of dough using a cookie scoop or a spoon and roll in the sanding sugar.

10. Place on the prepared baking sheet 2 inches apart from one another.

11. Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees. Do not over-bake your cookies.

12. Remove cookies from oven and place the chocolate heart directly in the center of each warm cookie.

13. Place a heart sprinkle on top of the chocolate if desired.

14. Place cookies in the refrigerator to cool for 10-15 minutes.  This will help keep the chocolate heart shape.
